Anger Management Psychiatric Care in Portland, OR

Anger that is frequent, intense, or disproportionate to the situation is rarely just a bad temper. It usually has a clinical driver. PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, intermittent explosive disorder, and BPD all involve anger as a significant symptom. Getting to what is actually causing it produces better outcomes than anger management techniques alone. At Aspirant Wellness Solution our PMHNP provides psychiatric evaluation to identify what is driving problematic anger and manages the medication and coordination side of treatment, alongside referrals to therapists in Portland when behavioural skills work is needed.

What We Address

Anger Driven by PTSD and Trauma

Hyperarousal and triggered anger responses that are rooted in traumatic experience

Irritability From Depression

Persistent low-level irritability that is actually a feature of depression, not a character trait

Bipolar-Related Anger and Irritability

Intense irritability during manic, hypomanic, or mixed episodes

ADHD Impulsive Anger

Quick anger responses tied to poor impulse regulation rather than intent

Intermittent Explosive Disorder

Recurrent, sudden aggressive outbursts that are grossly disproportionate to the trigger

Understanding Anger as a Symptom

Why Anger Management Skills Alone Often Are Not Enough

Anger management classes and techniques teach skills for recognising and managing anger responses. They are genuinely useful. But they work much better when the underlying conditions driving the anger are also being addressed. Someone whose anger is rooted in PTSD hyperarousal, bipolar irritability, or untreated ADHD is going to find those skills much harder to apply than someone without those conditions, and much less effective even when they do.

Our group therapy programme includes an anger management and conflict resolution group focused on building insight into where anger comes from, what its effects are, and how to manage conflict constructively. The psychiatric evaluation side of our service identifies what conditions are contributing and treats them directly with medication when appropriate.

We also need to be honest about the difference between anger as a clinical symptom and anger as a chosen response. The psychiatric piece addresses the former. The therapeutic piece addresses both. We coordinate with therapists in Portland who provide the skills-building component.

How We Approach Anger Management

Evaluation and Psychiatric Support for Anger in Portland

Treatment starts with identifying what is driving the anger. That determines both whether medication is appropriate and which type would be most useful.

1

Step 1: Psychiatric Evaluation

We assess the anger pattern in detail, including frequency, triggers, intensity, duration, and any history of violence or legal consequences. We screen for PTSD, depression, bipolar, ADHD, and personality disorders.

2

Step 2: Identify the Driver

We determine which underlying condition is most responsible for the anger pattern and prioritise treatment accordingly.

3

Step 3: Medication When Appropriate

Mood stabilisers for bipolar-related anger, SSRIs for PTSD or depression-driven irritability, ADHD medications for impulsive anger. The medication fits the diagnosis, not the symptom.

4

Step 4: Therapy Coordination

We refer to therapists in Portland who provide anger management skills, cognitive behavioural approaches, or DBT as appropriate to the underlying diagnosis.
